Cos British drivers are just awful, apparently.

"The first self-driving cars to be operated by ordinary British drivers will be left deliberately unmarked so that other drivers will not be tempted to “take them on”, a senior car industry executive has revealed."

If a homeless person has an alcohol or drug dependency, then it's MORE important that they get money, not less. Withdrawal can kill, especially if you're sleeping rough or your health is otherwise compromised. Incidentally, alcohol is one of the most dangerous substances to withdraw from, far more so than most illegal drugs.

If you don't like your money ending up with drug dealers, I totally sympathise. So why not campaign for prescription heroin and for treatment programmes that don't demand abstinence? How about creating programmes that don't force people with alcohol dependency into immediate withdrawal, but provide them services and a safe space to wean themselves off at their own pace?

This taught me about the Kelly criterion, so I will definitely be a better gambler in future (if this situation ever arises).

Gosh, quite a discovery. Asperger's views on autism have not only been vindicated, but it now emerges that Kanner actually knew about Asperger's work and used it without attribution.

"Kanner and Asperger had divergent views of autism. Asperger’s was expansive. He believed that autism was what Frankl called a “continuum,” or what is now called “the spectrum.” ... Kanner, however, framed autism as a rare form of childhood psychosis and, eventually—under pressure from his Freudian psychoanalytic colleagues—adopted the view that it was caused by bad parenting and “refrigerator mothers.”

"Sex workers are easy targets for immigration stings. It's cash-in-hand work that requires no papers and can be done with little English. Despite being legal, it's regarded as shady and illegitimate. Who's going to complain if a few hookers get sent home? No coincidence, perhaps, that the same week women in Leeds were detained, similar raids took place in London and Bolton." Vice

Also, this is just.... wow:

"They don’t necessarily see they’re being taken advantage of and it’s part of our job to make them aware."

Hoards of white people searching for an "authentic" shamanistic experience may render ayahuasca vine extinct, or at least beyond the financial reach of the actual Amazonians who require it for their indigenous spiritual practices. The irony is that the relevant compounds (DMT and some sort of MAOI) are found in a large number of easily-obtained plant species, and even as synthetic chemicals. So there's absolutely no need to harvest ayahuasca vine to experience the desired psychedelic effect.

"Sudden local and international demand for the brew has put the ayahuasca vine used to make the tea at risk of eradication in parts of Peru, and tripled its price in the last seven years to $250 a liter. The vine is almost impossible to plant, as it only thrives in the thick of the jungle and takes four years to grow, so the natural reserves are limited."

"There has been a lot of innovation in drone technology over the past decade, and much of it has been made possible by smartphone components. Batteries developed to power smartphones for a whole day have increased the length of time that drones can stay in the air. Powerful, but low-power, smartphone processors help too. Sophisticated wifi and Bluetooth wireless chips have allowed drones to stay in touch with their owners over longer distances."

"The young Macedonians who run these sites say they don’t care about Donald Trump. They are responding to straightforward economic incentives: As Facebook regularly reveals in earnings reports, a US Facebook user is worth about four times a user outside the US. The fraction-of-a-penny-per-click of US display advertising — a declining market for American publishers — goes a long way in Veles. Several teens and young men who run these sites told BuzzFeed News that they learned the best way to generate traffic is to get their politics stories to spread on Facebook — and the best way to generate shares on Facebook is to publish sensationalist and often false content that caters to Trump supporters." It makes sense that this model of education produces better results, though I don't think it necessarily has to be associated with a particular institutional model - i.e. the self-governing, non-unionised charter school.

"Many charter schools fail to live up to their promise, but one type has repeatedly shown impressive results... “high expectations, high support” schools ... devote more of their resources to classroom teaching and less to almost everything else. They keep students in class for more hours. They set high standards for students and try to instill confidence in them. They focus on giving teachers feedback about their craft and helping them get better."

Holy hell, this is heartbreaking. :( :( Politicians who exploit xenophobic, racist and misogynist sentiment to win elections are (usually) careful never to actually incite violence, but *everyone* understands the subtext. The same sort of things happened here in the few days after the Brexit vote. We all have to stand up to this. Some practical advice for intervening if you see harassment here.

This is kind of fascinating. Interesting to note some of the articles tagged as "very liberal" appearing in my own feed.

Not endorsing everything in this article, but this statistic is just... wow. Quite a stark reminder that mass incarceration is in part a direct result of the war on drugs.

"Ministry of Justice figures from 2013 revealed that 55% of prisoners connected their offences to drug-taking, with the need for money to buy drugs the most commonly cited factor."

Very interesting piece on how various recent technological innovations have piggybacked on the mass-scale manufacture of smartphones

[CN: drugs]

Really great story. Prescription heroin obviously isn't a cure-all, but it needs to be an option in the medical care of people with opioid dependencies.

"Provision of medical grade heroin under the supervision of a medical [professional] significantly decreases the risks of overdose, infection with HIV or Hepatitis due to use of shared needles, and crime due to having to buy drugs illegally. For those who, for whatever reason, can not quit, medically supervised heroin maintenance may be the only option that will save their lives. "
